Ansoffs Consulting, a management consulting organization offering recruitment services, has been contracted by Scott Christian University (SCU), a leading Christian University, to recruit a Deputy Vice Chancellor, Academic Affairs.

Scott Christian University (SCU), formerly Scott Theological College, was established in 1962 as the national theological college of the Africa Inland Church Kenya. It was chartered in 1997 and has since expanded its academic offering to enhance a greater scope of service and ministry for transformation of the society.

Its main campus is located in Machakos County, Machakos Town along Machakos-Kangundo Road.

SCU’s vision is to be a centre of holistic transformative education to the society for the glory of God. Additionally, its mission is to provide innovative and quality education: training, research and mentorship, for sustainable change of individuals for God’s service.

The University Council now seeks to recruit suitable, visionary, competent and qualified individual to fill the position of DEPUTY VICE-CHANCELLOR, ACADEMIC AFFAIRS. This position will deputise the Vice-Chancellor and assist the office and the council in achieving SCU’s vision and mission. The office holder will therefore be expected to model a high standard of personal Christian leadership, ministry and integrity and lead by example in providing spiritual guidance to staff and students on SCU’s vision, mission and core values.

The requisite qualifications are as described below:

Overall Responsibility

This position reports directly to the Vice-Chancellor and is responsible for strategic leadership in academic planning and quality teaching and learning. It is the overall provision of leadership to the academic and academic-related units of the university including but not limited to the Student Affairs and the Research and Innovation divisions.

Duties and Responsibilities

The duties and responsibilities of the position holder shall include: –

  • Being in charge of the academic function of the University.
  • Providing governance and leadership in the management of Academic Affairs to enhance high academic standards.
  • Formulation and implementation of the approved Academic Affairs strategy and policies and guidance in its interpretation and clarity
  • Formulation and implementation of research and innovation strategies and policies which effectively support the University’s research and innovation objectives and provide a platform for industry-university linkage for both faculty and students.
  • Maintain established collaborations and linkages with both local and international institutions of higher learning for academic research and innovations programmes.
  • Responsibility for implementing academic polices and other decision of the University senate
  • Oversight of academic planning, academic program review, and curriculum development working through the Deans to ensure that the University’s academic programs are current and effectively prepare graduates to meet market needs.
  • Coordinate teaching, research and academic support for all academic programmes and projects.
  • Coordinate examination management, post-graduate studies and research, development of library, information and ICT services and admission of students.
  • Responsibility in budget preparation for the academic division and academic-related programs
  • Provision of leadership in creating and maintaining relevant academic standards and policies which effectively support the strategic goals of the University.
  • Development of a performance culture that promotes high performance, teaching excellence and creativity.
  • Promotion of engagement and partnerships with other universities and partners and institutions
  • Support the formulation and implementation of fundraising efforts for academic, research and innovations programmes and projects.
  • Promote professional development among faculty and academic staff to ensure the University attracts and retains qualified and competent academic staff.

In the capacity of Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Academic Affairs, the holder of this office shall also serve as:

  1. The Secretary to the University Senate
  2. A member of the University Management Board
  3. A member of the University Council Standing Committees

Minimum Qualifications and Requirements:

  1. Must be a holder of an earned Doctorate degree or equivalent qualification from a university recognised in Kenya.
  2. Must be of the academic ranking of either Professor or Associate Professor with a demonstrable track record of scholarly productivity by way of refereed journals publications, university level books as well as project grants and awards.
  3. Must have served substantively and successfully in a recognised University as either Dean of School, Principal or Deputy Principal of Campus or University College, Academic Director or any other leadership position in comparable levels for a minimum period of eight (8) years.
  4. Must have demonstrated competence in academic leadership in an academic/research environment.
  5. Must have a demonstrable awareness of the current trends in university education in Kenya and the factors and conditions shaping its development.
  6. Must have and be able to demonstrate the skills, capacity and determination to initiate and facilitate the development of quality market and society driven academic and research programmes.
  7. Must demonstrate ability in networking, fund-raising and management of research funds.
  8. A registered member of a relevant professional body or association is preferred.
  9. Must have and demonstrate high standards of ethics, professionalism and integrity.
  10. Must have strong leadership, interpersonal and communication skills.
  11. Proven problem-solving and organisation skills.
  12. Ability to work under pressure without compromising quality of work.
  13. Flexible and firm.

Tenure of Office

The Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Academic Affairs shall hold office for a duration of five (5) years with the possibility of one-time renewal for a further term of five (5) years subject to satisfactory performance.
